Geographic data is used to describe our world though the study of the land, its inhabitants, how it is used and earth phenomena. Geographical data or geographically referenced information is processed through a system called Geographic information systems or GIS, which is used to capture, manage, analyze, store and display this information in a way that is easily understood and communicated. Consequently we are able to better understand our surroundings and therefore provide realistic solutions.
GIS is used in many ways by a variety of professionals. For example, electrical companies use it to keep track of their grid, architects use it to study and analyze a site before designing and disaster management offices use it to help with predictions and provide relief. In the land use section of Physical Planning Division, this information is used to provide solutions to Physical Planning and land use issues, track subdivisions of land, provide environmental assessments and create maps.
